Don Sherlock of The Register recently wrote an article detailing some of the difficulties today’s economic climate is forcing on the CCBL and the individual franchises. http://www.wickedlocal.com/capecod/sports/x709128361/Economy-taking-a-toll-on-Cape-League
The Hyannis Mets are gone, and so are my hopes of seeing a baseball-head Mr. Met mascot dancing on the dugout under the lights behind the former Barnstable High School. The Hyannis Harbor Hawks, not to be confused with Triple H, have a great lineup with many returners and major league legacies. Hyannis has six returning [...]
Note from Greg: Below is my son’s first post for CodBall. Ryan is a talented pitcher and catcher who has watched many seasons on the Cape. He’s also an avid reader of baseball books and websites. And not a bad writer himself. * * * The Wareham Gatemen is one of the most storied CCBL teams in the league’s 124 [...]
Alphabetically he is the first Major Leaguer in the book. Now he can add another distinction: Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame. David Aardsma (Falmouth), Seattle Mariners closer, heads (again, alphabetically) a list of 10 men announced this weekend to the CCBL Hall of Fame. Inductees include former Texas Rangers slugger, general manager and current broadcaster [...]
We’re not quite as organized as we were last season so look for our season previews of the CCBL’s 10 teams in no particular order over the course of the coming week or so. Gettin’ excited? * * * The Commodores continue in 2010 with their rich pipeline into Wichita State, Oregon State and Missouri. Somehow Falmouth [...]
Buster Posey (Y-D ‘06-’07) is back in the bigs (according to this tweet by ESPN’s Buster Olney), and this time it looks like he’ll stay there. It’s expected that Posey will immediately be starting at 1st, and that he will get a game or two off per week. Giants fans, and us at CodBall, have [...]
College baseball is well represented on ESPN’s list of the top things for baseball things to see this summer. The first item on the chronologically-ordered list is Opening Day for the Cape League. The College World Series is listed as the third stop and The Midnight Sun Game (Alaska Baseball League) is fourth. The Cape League [...]
One of the benefits of writing this blog is that when I travel to cities that support professional baseball teams I have a high likelihood of knowing players on one or more of the rosters. When you write about the Cape Cod Baseball League long enough, you are going to know a few pros and [...]
The San Diego Padres have called up ex-Wareham Gateman Lance Zawadzki from Triple-A Portland and they have placed Everth Cabrera on the 15 day disabled list with a strained hamstring. Zawadzki played in all 44 games for Wareham in 2005. He batted .240 with 2 homeruns and 17 RBI. Here in Ashland, MA., there is some added excitement to [...]
Mike Couzens, long-time friend of CodBall and former Falmouth Commodores broadcaster, tipped us off yesterday that Drew Storen (Cotuit Ketleers ‘08) would be promoted to the Washington Nationals’ Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse. Sure enough, The Washington Post reported it’s official. While Stephen Strasbourg continues to steal all of the headlines, the Nats have another top prospect quickly rising [...]
Thanks to Soxy Lady and Joe Gill for inviting CodBall – and the Cape League more broadly — to Boston’s Blogapalooza this Sunday at the Baseball Tavern. Sadly we are unable to make it this year, but I wanted to draw folks’ attention to the growing blogosphere of sports writing. Blogapalooza is an event where social [...]
ESPN is reporting that the Texas Rangers have purchased the contract of Justin Smoak (Cotuit Kettleers ‘06) from the Oklahoma City Redhawks (AAA). Smoak led the Redhawks with a .470 OBP through 15 games. Chris Davis has been optioned to the minors. Listen to our CodBall Conversation with Smoak, which was recorded after his impressive 2006 [...]
A few things concerning Team USA, a message for Theo Epstein, and even a couple items pertaining to the Cape League….. College baseball fans might want to tune in to ESPNU this Friday (4/23) to check out the game between Louisiana State and Mississippi. Many scouts wil be on hand to see a likely pitching matchup of LSU’s Anthony Ranaudo (2-0; 3.00 ERA) going [...]
Unfortunately, we won’t be seeing a Kettler in a Kettleer’s uniform this summer. Oklahoma INF Chad Kettler is one of five players who have recently been released from their contracts by Cotuit. Other players dropped from the roster are David Rollins (LHP, San Jacinto College), Andrew Chafin (LHP, Kent State), Michael Schum (RHP, Wright State) and Adam Smith (INF, [...]
